10 rules for myself as a writer:
I would love to expand my vocabulary. This is
always something I’ve struggled with but in order to do this I plan on using
one new word for every piece of writing I do from now on.
2.)
My next goal is to figure out how to use the
semicolon correctly. My English teachers have always tried to explain how to
use it and I understood it, until I try to use it myself. I draw a blank almost
every time I try.
3.)
I will organize my thoughts before writing them.
I constantly find myself very scattered in my writing with ideas just plopped
on the page without properly organizing them. To do this I will make a list of
my ideas then think for how to communicate these thoughts properly.
4.)
I will re-read my work. Very often I turn
something in without reading over the work for basic grammatical errors that I
would’ve caught had I read it over. It’s a simple task, I just need to remember
to do it.
5.)
When I write my ideas for my first draft, I will
just write it down and worry about fixing it later. I often find myself
thinking too much about if I should write down a certain sentence or not.
6.)
I will only make relevant statements in my
writing, no fluff. Even if I struggle to think of something to say.
7.)
I will take the proper amount of time to
brainstorm and not rush into my writing too quickly. If you start writing a
long paper that you only thought about for a couple minutes, it’s most likely
not going to be the best it can be.
8.)
I will make sure that I do not use run on
sentences. Only connect two sentences at a time.
9.)
I will take a break before re-reading my paper. A
lot of times if you take a 10 minutes break and come back to what you are
writing, you are more likely to pick up on the mistakes you’ve made thus far.
10.) I will not wait until the night before to
start a paper. I will take the proper time to analyze what I’ve written and
will never make it so I am rushed to finish a project/paper.
