Informal Writing #6
Our group is
debating the question “Is college the best path for young people?”. The people
that are debating the Negative Side are Kevin, Tara and Jeff. Kevin is
completing the opening and closing statement, Tara is partaking in Argument 1
and Argument 3, and Jeff is partaking in Argument 2. On the pro side Kimi is
completing the opening statement and closing statement, while Elizabeth is
discussing Argument 1 and 3, and finally Haoyun partaking in Argument 2.
As for the
information that our group knows about the topic there are several points. One
main point is that most of the group member’s parents attended college which
somewhat pushes all of our attendance to college. For this point we also know
that not everyone is able to be successful without college. These days you need
a degree to get anything because the job market is so competitive. During hard
economic times having a degree may be the only way to get a job. On the other
hand though there are many successful people who didn’t go to college and still
were successful. This includes sports players, musicians, and many entrepreneurs.
The experiences that we have include being in college as students currently and
seeing the successes that our parents have had with attending college. All of
this information entails the extent to which we know the topic.
The main
arguments that we are debating include the pro side in which college is the
best path because it allows you to get a degree and a higher paying job where
on the other hand the con side argues that there are many successful people
that are making a lot of money including famous people, athletes and musicians.
Given the articles from class and the readings we can use some of that information
towards the arguments that we are making. Using articles that are for and
against the arguments we can assure that our arguments are clear and supported.
The information
that we are going to need is statistics including those on the average amount
of money that you make with a degree and the amount of people that are
successful without going to college. This will include real life examples, and
scholarly articles. We will also need studies about the number of people that
go to college and the amount of people that have jobs without going to college.
In addition we will need further information to bolster our argument, which we
have not yet explored. The philosophical questions that we need in order to
better understand our topic are, What is the impact that is made by either
going to college or choosing a different path? How do we measure success? What
are the reasons behind attending college? With all of the given information and
the further research we will create an argument that is fully supported and
clearly stated.
