In
the article “I’m Not Saving Up for my Son’s College Tuition- Here’s Why”, the author
uses all of the rhetorical appeals; however she uses pathos and ethos the most.
Using her past experiences, she talks about how she had to work her way through
college and grad school, appealing with pathos and also ethos. Nevertheless, if
the author used factual evidence along with her personal experience it could
persuade the audience, probably parents of teenagers or when college students,
in her favor. This article was one of my favorite to read because it was very interesting
and was a different perspective that I haven’t thought before. In another article
I read, “Why Does College Cost So Most—And Why Do So Many Pundits Get It Wrong?”
the author uses a more professional approach. In this article, the author
mostly uses statics to make her audience appeal to her argument. She uses logos
has her most used rhetorical appeal. This article was hard for me to read
because it was too professional, maybe if she had a graphic image in her
argument then her article would appeal more to the younger crowd. Both of these
articles alienate their argument, informing their audience on what they
learned. However, the first article could also persuade her audience into not
paying for children’s college tuition.
Before I read the first articles, I thought I wasn’t going
to agree with anything the author would say, however she had some good points. Yet,
some of the points she made I strongly disagree with; I believe parents should
help pay for their children tuition, if not all then some. Making a teenage work
every day after school can affect their grades. I believe the parents should help
pay for the first year until the student gets use to college, then they can
take up a job and work for their tuition. On the other hand, I do agree with
the second article from the beginning to the end. College is expensive and the
better the school the more expensive it is. Schools like NYU and Harvard are
expensive because they are so elite and are the best school in the nation. I agree the most with this article even
through it was uninteresting and sometimes boring, I agreed 100 percent with is
article. I believe every senior high school student should read this article
before applying to college, to understand how expensive college is. Like I said
at the beginning, I did enjoy the first more than the second because it was
easier to read; yet my parents are paying for my whole tuition, I am still
getting a job to help because I am the second youngest of 7 children they have
sent to college. My parents worked hard for my siblings and myself to enjoy all
of college.
In conclusion, both articles are appeal to their audience
in all of the rhetorical appeals. Both articles are similar in many ways but also
are different. I agree with the second article even though I enjoyed the first
article more. The first article I didn’t agree with at first but it made me
look at the situation differently.
